Running a war when China has invaded Taiwan could be a bit hard. We should establish a chip fabrication plant in Australia as soon as possible. We can make steel, aluminium, power cables and even rockets, but without the intelligence part we would be back in 1945. If China invades Taiwan in 2027, we have only 18 months to do it. The USA might thank us mightily if we did.

    One part of the story that isn’t as well known is there is a high likelihood that China will have developed technology to detect submarines by the time we receive them.

    In my opinion, it’s the worst possible deal we could have done for our country and we are not guaranteed a single submarine at the end of paying off the $368billion.

    We would have been far better off with UAV’s and long range missiles.

As John said we have excellent robotics technology and skills, and there are exciting drone companies like Carbonix and Orbital out there. We have next to no skills or experience with nuclear power.

    While there was a difficult learning curve with our Collins Class submarines, they created a skill set in Australia for manufacturing conventional submarines, which we should continue to capitalise on. In fact a smarter government would have been active in developing the next generation while the existing ones have been used and been aging, meaning by now we would be ready to go with better ones, independent of a need for buying from elsewhere.

  4. Marles announces $1.7bn purchase of Ghost Shark drone subs
    Defence minister Richard Marles just announced a $1.7bn effort to buy a new fleet of autonomous undersea vehicles called Ghost Sharks for the Royal Australian Navy.

    The navy has signed a contract with Anduril Australia to deliver, maintain and develop the Ghost Shark over the next five years, a program “designed to conduct intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike operations, stealthily and at long range”.

    The Ghost Sharks will be manufactured in Australia,

    Marles just told reporters at a press conference:

    “It exemplifies the fact that Australia is leading the world in terms of autonomous underwater military capabilities. A Ghost Shark is capable of engaging in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike. This is a profoundly important capability for the Royal Australian Navy.

    This is the leading capability in the world in terms of a long-range autonomous underwater capability.

    Much of what we need to do in terms of meeting the strategic moment and meeting the strategic challenge our nation faces, is having a highly capable navy in all its forms.”

    1. Good news that an autonomous vehicle concept has been pursued, but … it is a pity though that they chose an American company, and that the drone subs did not exist before, had to be developed from scratch. In my opinion would have been a perfect R&D project contracted to an Australian company.

  6. The waste of money to an unstable “ally” has started:

    “The federal government is making a $12bn “downpayment” on a shipbuilding facility in Western Australia to prepare it for future nuclear-powered submarines.

    The Henderson defence precinct will cost $25bn over a decade and will be used to build surface vessels and to dock and sustain submarines including those to be delivered under the Aukus agreement.

    Under the $368bn Aukus agreement with the US and the United Kingdom, Australia will buy at least three Virginia-class submarines from the US and build at least three new ones in South Australia.

    The Pentagon is reviewing the arrangement amid “very serious concerns” about it, but the Washington Post reported on Saturday that the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, has told the defence minister, Richard Marles, the deal would go ahead.

    Marles met his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth, the US vice-president, JD Vance, and Rubio in August.”

Since the war on Iran started, the position of Australasia versus its main enemy, China, has become more insecure due to our increased dependence on the US for both deterrence and defence (in case of dire straits). Apart from measures to shore up defence capability in a hurry, firm diplomacy is essential to maintain at least the impression that one is willing to make a stand in case of attack.

    It should be noted that nations in many ways mimic personal relations between individuals/groups of unequal power. The one seeking to dominate the other is asserting dominance by, amongst other means, encroaching on the other’s space and assets with some excuse or ambit claim. Any defence by the one under attack is big-noted by the bully as an attack on it’s sovereignty, etc.

    Internationally, the bully has already a number of other nations cowed to the extent that they look the other way when one of their number’s sovereignty and territory is being encroached upon. In national affairs, the system supports those bullies which are in control at the expense of those being attacked, encroached upon and exploited.

    In personal relationships it is the bully who, first of all, sets out to isolate their victim in the social/political sphere. There is always a relationship of dependency in such a case, be it emotional-mental or, more often, financial-economic. The bully relies on support from those already cowed and the media under its control, banking on the fact that towards the wider community he/she, but usually he, has maintained a pleasant front. Bullies maintain as a rule relationships of trust with those they need for public support. The latter is not the case in international affairs anymore; thanks to both Putin and Trump, international niceties have largely been done away with. Subservience, however, has become more prominent.

    What does it all mean for Australasia? The electorate has only a very slight and indirect influence on any of their government’s foreign relations policies , but it would be a good start if the electorates in question were to take bullying by the horns at personal level, and once comfortable with that, vis-a-vis the authorities. To make a stand by simply voicing one’s opinion in the public domain is already difficult enough, as the mainstream media, which controls the public domain, tolerates only token dissent.

    Maybe a Citizens Advocacy Bureau is the answer; not incorporated, of course, but instituted in the social-mental space. Defence begins at home, where the heart is.
